Demonstrators assault journalist, damaged camera

Freedom Forum has been concerned over press freedom violation occurred in Dhangadi, on 2 October 2018.

Chandrakant Joshi, a journalist associated with Sagarmatha Television and STS Television, was assaulted by demonstrators protesting the government failure in identifying the culprit of a rape case. The incident occurred at District Attorney Office Dhangadi. Dhangadi lies in Province 7 of Nepal.

According to FF representative for Province 7, DR Pant, the mob during the demonstration assaulted the journalists and damaged his camera for news covering on demonstration. The journalist received minor injury. However, his camera is completely damaged.

Freedom Forum condemns the incident that poses threat to press freedom and journalists' profession. These kind of incidents are against citizen's right to information. Freedom Forum strongly urges the concerned protesters to respect press freedom and do not attack the journalist who are doing their job. Also, FF suggests the journalists to adopt the safety and security measures while covering the news of protest and demonstrations.
