Police harasses online reporters over news

Police arrested two online media journalists from their offices in Kathmandu on September 4 for publishing news. They were however released after two hours.

Editor of www.newskarobar.com, Nawaraj Kunwar, and reporter of www.onlinekhabar.com, Royal Acharya, were arrested from the offices by the civil police.

The journalists had carried separate news about arrest of a person by police over a domestic violence from Udaypur district.

Freedom Forum's representative in Province 3, Ashok Dahal, mentioning journalist Kunwar said he and Acharya were taken under control while having a discussion with a woman over the news content.

Irrespective of the news content, the grounds used by police to arrest reporters from their offices is condemnable. It is sheer harassment of journalists over news writing.

Police as the FF representative said had received complaint from the woman over the news. Police initially scared the journalist of being sued under the Electronic Transaction Act.

Police released the journalists after the woman agreed to withdraw her complaint against them, according to Kunwar, reported FF representative.
