Freedom Forum Condemns Disruption of Image Channel Broadcasting

Freedom Forum has been shocked to learn that the broadcasting of the Image Channel Television has been disrupted by the cable service operators.

Image Channel Television's broadcasting was suddenly disrupted while it was marking its 16th anniversary on January 13, 2013.

Talking to the Freedom Forum, a cable operator on a condition of anonymity said it was piled too much pressure to block the broadcasting.

Freedom Forum vehemently condemns the disruption in the broadcasting which violated media freedom, freedom of expression and people's right to information.

The government led by the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) has misused the authority and gagged the media freedom.

"The government has badly tampered people's right to freedom of expression and right to information which is quite deplorable in the democratic system. The Maoist-led government's frequent suppressions of media and challenge to human rights have exposed its authoritarian character," said Taranath Dahal, Chairperson of the Freedom Forum.

The pressure might have come after the Image Channel Television became critical about the atrocities and excesses of the current government in terms of freedom of speech, human rights and journalist's rights.

Freedom Forum therefore asks the government to lift the ban on broadcasting of the Television thereby respecting people's rights.
