Case filed against Journalist Chhetri without sufficient investigation

Freedom Forum's attention has been drawn towards filing a case on copy right against journalist and lyricist Surya Kumar Chhetri working with the Ujjyalo FM in the capital city.

The Kathmandu District Attorney filed the fraud case on February 3, 2012 against him as per the statement of a CRBT (Caller Ring Back Tone) fraud Yam Chhetri, claimed journalist  Surya Kumar Chhetri.

Journalist Chhetri said, "He aired an investigative news story about the CRBT fraud, Yam Chhetri on January 7, 2012. In the news he described how the CRBT fraud was cheating Nepal Telecom (NTC) customers by imposing CRBT music randomly which the NTC, only government provider of the mobile phones throughout Nepal, was also unaware in spite of excessive and illegal earning of money by the musician."

According to journalist Chhetri, the fraud Yam Chhetri imposed CRTB music in the telephone numbers with random selection.

Following the investigation into case as per the news, Yam Chhetri was detained for a month and released. He, however, told the authorities that journalist Surya Kumar was defrauding people with such malpractice.

Merely based on Yam's statement, the district attorney filed a fraud case against Surya Kumar which has panicked him much.

He argued that he was falsely implicated in the fraud because of the news reporting he made.
Freedom Forum objects the filing of case to journalist Chhetri without sufficient investigation on another's accusation. As it harasses the journalist who conducted investigative reporting on the copy right violation in CRBT business, the concerned attorney is urged to further conduct investigation fairly and cater justice accordingly.
