Inebriated Policeperson beats up journalist Acharya

Freedom Forum's attention has been drawn again towards an incident occurred in Banke, a district in the southern belt of the Midwest of Nepal on the night of November 22, 2011.

A head constable Giriraj BC who was on duty but drunk beat up journalist Obiraj Acharya near Bheri Zonal Hospital while he was returning home from the workstation.

Affiliated to a local Bageshwori FM, journalist Acharya said to Freedom Forum's Media Monitoring Desk, "Head constable BC beat me accusing me of complaining about the commotion he made after heavy drink."

It is quite ironical that the security person whose duty is to provide security to common public and maintain law and order is himself involved in panicking people- that too- a journalist.

Such incidents contribute negatively to the rights of journalists compelling them to practice self-censorship which is detrimental to the press freedom.

Freedom Forum therefore urges concerned administration to mete out action to the head constable who not only panicked commoners but to the journalist as well.
