Death Threat to journalist Bishwanath Thakur

On January 29, journalist Bishwanath Thakur, executive editor of Madhesh Post Daily was issued death threat in Sarlahi – a southern plain Terai district of Nepal. Similarly, a threat was also issued against journalist Shree Ram Rayamajhi, subeditor of Janapratibimba Daily published from Parsa adjacent to Sarlahi three days ago.

A person named Ramdaresh Mandal issued threat to journalist Thakur over phone saying he would kill the latter. Mandal had rung up Thakur on his mobile phone to intimidate him. Mandal told journalist Thakur that it was the news report published in the Madhesh Post Daily regarding the recent reshuffle of the Cabinet that infuriated and caused him to do so.

Freedom Forum has deep concern over the recurring events of press freedom violation especially in Terai districts these days. The Forum condemns the incidents of intimidation issued to journalists for the news coverage. The Forum asks the local administration to make appropriate workable environment for journalists by discouraging press freedom perpetrators.
