Journalists beaten up by Security personnel

Damodar Guragain, Journalist and Itahari Branch Chief of Aauzar daily, was severely beaten up by police personnel in Itahari chowk—lies in the eastern part of Nepal— at 9 PM at night on June 10.

Journalist Guragain was severely beaten by a police team led by Head Constable Narayan Koirala while he was waiting for his brother in Itahari chowk.

Reportedly, two other youth who were drunk misbehaved with women police personnel before attendance of Guragain. When two youths who were involved in misbehave with police left for their home, police turned to Mr. Guragain and accused him of being leader of the two youths and started to beat him.

After the incident, police team took Guragain to the Itahari Police Station where he was again beaten up. The police even seized the cell phone used by journalist Guragain and did not allow him to contact anyone. He was released around 11 PM at night.

Freedom Forum strongly condemns the act of the police and demands appropriate action to be taken against those responsible in the incident.
