Transport Workers Rains Stone at Journalist on Duty

Kathmandu- DR Pokharel, correspondent of Awaaz Daily from Pokhara and Federation of Nepali Journalists, Kaski Chapter Member was severely injured at New Road, Pokhara in the western part of Nepal on July 24, Thursday. The agitating transport workers rained stones at him while he had reached there to cover the news story of bandh.

“These are the journalists, who are writing to provoke against us”, he quoted transport workers as saying.

Journalist Pokharel sustained serious injury at his head, hand and backside and is undergoing treatment at Model hospital in Pokhara. The transport workers did not stop their unruly activities even when he produced his press card, according to the information received by Freedom Forum.

He came under attack when clashes ensued between agitating students and transport workers in various parts of Pokhara. The clashes took a nasty turn when students demanding 45 per cent discount in public vehicles fare and scrapping of syndicate systems vandalized three taxis at Prithvi Chowk.

Showing serious concerns over the assault on the journalist discharging own duty, Freedom Forum draws the attention of the concerned authority to come up with special measures to check such naked interference.

The Forum demands the government to provide him with necessary treatment free of cost and take stern actions against those involved in the incident.
