Sixteen Journalists Detained by Police Force

The police administration arrested some 16 journalists from the southern gate of Singhadurbar this afternoon while the latter were staging sit-in to draw government’s attention on the demands of Nepal One Television journalists. It was the pre-scheduled protest programme organized with the view to calling for government’s intervention on Nepal One Television.

Among those arrested in course of the protest today are Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), Secretary Ramji Dahal, Central Member Ujir Magar, FNJ, Kathmandu Chapter Chairperson Yuba Raj Bidrohi, Rishi Dhamala, Bimal Rimal, Keshab Aryal, KP Gautam and Raj Kumar Regmi and others.

Journalists and employees of Kathmandu-based Indian Television Channel have been on agitation for the past few weeks demanding justice to media persons.

“Police administration has also been using excessive force to thwart our demonstration. We do not go back from our stand as the struggle is against injustice dispensed with journalists”, said Yuba Raj Bidrohi, FNJ, Kathmandu Chairperson.

Expressing solidarity to the demands and move of Nepal One TV journalists and media workers, Freedom Forum condemns the police intervention on the peaceful demonstration of working journalists and asks the immediate release of journalists. The Forum urges the government to show respect to the demands of journalists and take measures at the earliest to settle the row.
