Reporter at Nepallead.com Suman Dhungana received abusive messages following the publication of a news report on July 23.
Dhungana told Freedom Forum that he had reported on the alleged illegal encroachment of public land to operate a resort in Pokhara Metropolitan City. The news portal published both video report and a written story on the issue.
Following the publication, a person named Dinesh Acharya messaged Dhungana asking to meet him and sent abusive messges as he refused. Dhungana filed a complaint at the District Police Office, Kaski on July 24, seeking legal action against Acharya.
According to Dhungana, the police summoned both parties to appear at the District Police Office on July 27. During the discussion, Acharya admitted that he was unaware of journalists' rights and the proper procedure of approaching the Press Council Nepal for action against published news. The case was resolved through a mutual understanding, with Acharya's written apology in the presence of police officials.
Freedom Forum is concerned over the incident. The journalists must be able to report on matters of public interest without facing intimidation or harassment.
