Miscreants burnt Newspapers at Province 7

Freedom Forum condemns the incident of press freedom violation that some unidentified persons obstructed the vehicle carrying newspapers and burnt the copies of a national daily on 3 October.

A group of six miscreants obstructed the van carrying the newspapers burnt its copies of Kantipur daily and its sister publication the Kathmandu Post at Aatariya, Kailali, early in the morning. The hooligans forcibly stopped the van carrying the newspapers, seized the newspapers and burnt on the road.

Moreover, distributer Yagya Raj Joshi said the perpetrators seized the newspapers while unloading at his shop. He further informed that they rowdy fellows also set on fire the newspapers as Nagarik daily and Annapurna Post.

Commenting on the incident, FF's Executive Chief Taranath Dahal said, “It is an assault on press freedom which has blocked the free flow of information to people. This needs serious investigation.”

The newspapers were brought from the Nepalgunj press that was to be distributed in nine districts of the Province 7.

Freedom Forum condemns the incident as this is sheer violation of press freedom and freedom of information.

Freedom Forum deplores the incident of obstruction and newspaper burning and urges the local administration to bring the miscreants to book.
