Freedom Forum alarmed on 'anti-press incidents'

Krishna Acharya, a local reporter for Kantipur national daily in the western Gorkha district received threat from office bearer of District Red Cross Society on January 22.
Madhukar Wanta, an accountant of Society warned journalist Acharya of attacking and forcing him to flee from the workplace.
Journalist Acharya had shifted to another hotel for residence after Wanta threatened hotel owner to face any kind of consequences if not stopped to serve Acharya.
A news report was published in Kantipur daily regarding abuse of Ambulance and other vehicle belonging to Red Cross. It is assumed that same news is the cause behind the threat.
Similarly, Kirant Workers Party, an armed group in the eastern plain of Nepal, prevented sports journalist Santosh Ojha and his father Dhundi Raj from visiting their ancestral home in eastern Khotang on January 22, Friday.
Radio Nepal employee Ojha, who is a central committee member of FNJ-affiliated Nepal Sports Journalist Forum (NSJF), had showed his identity card to the cadres of Party. But they snatched his identity card saying that Ojhas are feudals and journalists are thieves. They blocked the Ojhas at Sungachari Bhanjyang, Khotang threatening to throw them into the Koshi river nearby.
In yet another incident, Nepal Army personnel misbehaved with journalists while visiting Indian Army chief Deepak Kapoor paid a visit to Jomsom on January 20, Wednesday.
Journalists were there to cover the news of General Kapoor's visit to the Nepal Army´s high-altitude training center.
"Army obstructed us from taking photos stating that the order from 'high command'", said local journalist Chandreshwor Bastakoti.
Freedom Forum denounces all above mentioned incidents. Regarding the threat and obstruction to journalists, the Forum urges the local administration to provide the security to journalist and punish the guilty at the earliest.
As far as misbehave with journalists from army personnel is concerned, Forum asks the government to investigate the incident in transparent manner and assure that the incident don't recur. Forum also asks the authority of Nepal Army to respect press freedom in the days to come.
